Cell-Ess® is a serum-free, animal-free synthetic replacement for Fetal Bovine Serum and other sera.
Does Cell-Ess work exactly like FBS with T-Cells?
Not always. Since Cell-Ess is chemically defined, it only has a fraction of the proteins and has no hormones, attachment factors or activation factors. So don’t be surprised if your cells look and respond differently with Cell-Ess. When culturing with Cell Ess your cells are not under the influence of all of the contaminants that are present in serum and you now have control over the variables.
What results will I see with Cell-Ess?
Without FBS, your cells may look and behave differently. There are attachment factors and signaling factors in FBS. For example a signaling factor like retinoic acid (RA), present in high amounts in serum, can affect cell differentiation And your cells may show slightly different proliferation and death rates.
What cell differentiation changes will I see when switching from FBS to Cell-Ess?
There are many components in FBS that can either induce or prevent differentiation. For example TGF-b, retinoic acid and plating factors in FBS all can impact differentiation. These components change from lot to lot and will obscure your results. Differentiation of T cells is a physiologically normal phenomenon that can occur without the addition of serum. Culturing in Cell Ess will allow you to control cell signaling inputs and observe more physiologically relevant results.
How is Cell-Ess® better than serum?
First, Cell-Ess® is chemically defined, so it works the same each time, giving you greater control and confidence in your media’s performance. Cell-Ess® contains no animal products or unknown contaminants that could impact your work or require later purification steps.
Does Cell-Ess® contain any protein?
Cell-Ess® contains very low amounts (<50 µg/L) of essential recombinant proteins. These proteins are non-animal and/or synthetic in origin. FBS contains between 32-70g/L of dozens of undefined bovine proteins, many of which can interfere with cell growth or performance.
Does Cell-Ess® contain any plant hydrolysates or any additives not in FBS?
No. It has no plant or animal-derived additives of any kind.
Does Cell-Ess® cost more than FBS?
Cell-Ess® is priced about the same as high-quality FBS and its total cost can often be less. If you now do extra steps with FBS like multi-lot testing, heat-inactivation, , centrifugation, filtering, and having to buy and store large volumes of one lot of serum, Cell-Ess® could cost you less.
How do I use it in place of FBS?
Cell-Ess® was designed to be used in the same ratios as FBS, therefore there calculation would be to use a volume of Cell Ess for each volume of FBS, in your current cell culture medium. So if you are now using 10% FBS in DMEM, use 10% Cell-Ess® in DMEM.
Do my cells need to be adapted away from FBS to work with Cell-Ess®?
For cell line applications: yes, adapting your cells to Cell-Ess® is best for optimum performance. For work with primary cells: Cell-Ess® can be cultured directly in medium with Cell-Ess®.
Is Cell-Ess® a new product?
Very new, it is just being introduced to the market in 2014. Cell-Ess® has been in development for several years.

Cell-Ess® is produced in the USA and Europe under cGMP and ISO compliance.
Is Cell-Ess® stored frozen like FBS?
No, storage of Cell-Ess® is at 4oC making it easier to store and quicker to use.
I’ve noticed that other serum-free products seem to lose their potency if they aren’t used quickly. Is this true with Cell-Ess®?
No, Cell-Ess® was specially designed to allow it have full potency for a full year after its production date.
Why are the growth factors packaged separately?
